Crash Course on Coding
A one-day program for beginning coders and those wanting to brush up on their skills
By bundling three classes into one day, MSV gives you a more affordable and efficient way to learn about or refresh your coding skills. You will gain an understanding and application of billing and coding concepts and guidelines for diagnosis (ICD-9) and procedure (CPT, HCPCS) codes. Participants will also learn how to identify ways to help maximize reimbursement and how to link diagnosis and procedure codes together so that you can achieve claims paid in full on the first submission. In addition, you will learn the difference between Modifier-25 and Modifier-59, how the correct use will help ensure appropriate reimbursement, when it is applicable to use them, and the difference between the various modifiers that can cause confusion.

A six-session certification program for practice and hospital-based coders.

Students will work through a number of challenging coding scenarios in preparation for the CMC exam. Primary coding rules and principles will be reviewed, along with a medical terminology section designed exclusively for coders. Students will learn to master advanced coding issues, how to deal with modifiers and ancillary services, and selection of proper codes for E&M and ancillary services.

Certified Medical Insurance Specialist (CMIS)
A four-day certification program for practice and hospital staff.
A Certified Medical Insurance Specialist will be invaluable to the financial strength of the medical practice. This seminar will enhance participants’ overall skill and understanding of the most up-to-date medical insurance claims processing techniques. This seminar covers a variety of issues, including insurance claims processing, handling claims rejection and appeals, introduction to the coding system and methods for preventing Medicare fraud and abuse.

A webinar for practice and hospital staff.

This program covers a variety of issues including telephone etiquette, billing and collections, effective communications between staff members and patients, time management, how to deal with difficult patients and situations, and teamwork. HIPAA Goes HITECH
A webinar for the whole practice.
Are you aware that something as simple as losing a PDA or laptop that stores patient information could lead to costly patient notification requirements? The recently enacted HITECH Act expands upon HIPAA privacy and security standards, including requirements that patients be notified when their health information has been breached. Students of this course will learn about these new requirements to prepare their practice for enforcement deadlines for the various new standards that are staggered across several years, including a deadline of February 17, 2010 for several major provisions.

Your patients’ medical records are arguably the most valuable asset your practice has, which is why the management of these documents is governed by many laws and regulations. This half-day program provides valuable information on how to properly maintain both paper and electronic records, with topics of interest specific to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Subjects addressed include: patient rights and practice responsibilities, medical record retention, transfer of records, subpoenas, record destruction, records of minor patients, HIPAA, reporting to public health agencies, and recent law changes and updates.

Negotiating Effective Managed Care Contracts
A three-hour program for physicians, administrators, and staff.
This program is designed to provide the participant with practical and useful information regarding the managed care contracting process, including a review of the key terms, components of a managed care contract and their significance, and tips and strategies for negotiating with commercial payers. Participants will receive updates regarding trends in managed care contracting, including a discussion of new and controversial provisions payers are attempting to include in managed care contracts, and information on the various laws and regulations that impact and govern the managed care contracting process.

A webinar for residents, system-integrated physicians, or physicians considering employment.
This 90-minute webinar delivers valuable information about the common features of an employment contract and what you should expect to see when receiving an offer. Presented by attorneys whose representation centers on hospital and physician groups, this course will address a wide spectrum of key issues that you will almost certainly encounter, including covenants not to compete, termination clauses, compensation models, recruitment, and career development, thus enabling you to identify the items important to you when considering potential employers. Payback Prevention: Preparing for and Navigating Medicare and Medicaid Audits
A seminar for physicians, administrators and practice managers.
Every year, Medicare and Medicaid lose billions of dollars to overpayments and fraud, which has in turn led to the creation of several powerful audit programs that are directed to identify and reclaim funds that have been incorrectly paid to health care providers.  In this six-hour seminar, participants will receive valuable information on Medicare and Medicaid audit programs, with a focus on the Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) program, the Medicaid Integrity Program (MIP), and Virginia Medicaid audits.  After attending this seminar, participants will understand audit target areas, how to prepare for and respond to an audit, how to conduct a self-audit, and the legal issues that one might encounter during the audit process.

Professional Medical Coding Curriculum (PMCC) Course
A multi-session course for those wishing to become CPC certified.
This program is designed to prepare individuals for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification examination offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The curriculum is presented in a comprehensive format and covers medical terminology, anatomy overviews, and procedural and diagnostic coding organized in a way that is consistent with the most current standards. Students may choose to achieve CPC certification upon successful completion of the course by taking the CPC exam, which is proctored by MSV faculty.

Specialty Medical Coding Certification
A two-day course for billing and coding staff.
Intended for experienced coders, this course will enable coders to demonstrate expertise in a particular medical specialty. The curriculum is presented in a two-day format in which the exam is taken on day two. The program emphasizes the ability to read and abstract physician office notes and procedure notes to apply correct ICD-9, CPT AND HCPCS Level II and modifier coding assignments, as well as specialty-specific coding and regulations. Specialty certifications include: ambulatory surgical center, anesthesia and pain management, cardiology, cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, dermatology, emergency department, evaluation and management, family practice, gastroenterology, general surgery, hematology and oncology, internal medicine, obstetrics gynecology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, pediatrics, plastics and reconstructive surgery, rheumatology, and urology. Course fee includes specialty certification examination. This class is available as an onsite in-service program.
